About Dr. John Krcmarik
“I listen first and emphasize communication. I hope that my patients end each visit with an understanding of what is wrong and how we will treat it.”
A board-certified, fellowship-trained pulmonologist, Dr. John Krcmarik draws on more than two decades of widely ranging experience in his specialty to prevent, diagnose and treat acute and chronic diseases and conditions of the respiratory system in his patients at Beaufort Memorial Pulmonary Specialists. He brings particular expertise in the treatment of sleep disorders. He also manages care for patients admitted to the Beaufort Memorial intensive care unit (ICU).
Areas of Expertise
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) – An umbrella term for a group of inflammatory lung conditions, emphysema and chronic bronchitis among them, that block airflow and make it hard to breathe.
- Asthma – A condition in which the airways become inflamed, swollen and constricted, causing excessive mucous production, wheezing and shortness of breath.
- Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) – A broad-based term for an often-progressive group of diseases that cause scarring (fibrosis) and stiffening of the lungs, making breathing difficult.
- Lung Cancer Diagnosis – The use of clinical examination and imaging tools, including endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) scans, to identify and evaluate cancer of the lung.
- Sleep Apnea – A disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Loud snoring and morning fatigue are symptoms.

Background
Seeking “a lot more sun and a lot less gray and cold,” the Chicago native came to the Lowcountry in early 2024 from Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Mich., where since 2003 he had practiced pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine and served in several leadership positions, including as medical director of both Respiratory Care Services and the Munson Sleep Disorders Center. Born into a family of doctors, he says he “always loved medicine” and chose his specialty for the complex physiology it involves and a desire to care for sicker patients.
Dr. Krcmarik and his wife, Kelle, a former elementary school teacher, have two boys and a girl. He likes staying active, boating, time at the beach and playing tennis.
