Beaufort Memorial Pulmonary Specialists Expands to Lowcountry Medical Group
November 8, 2024To increase access to pulmonary care in the Lowcountry, Beaufort Memorial has expanded its Pulmonary Specialists practice to the Lowcountry Medical Group offices at 300 Midtown Drive in Beaufort. The practice will continue to see patients at its existing location in the Beaufort Memorial Okatie Medical Pavilion in Okatie as well.
"The expansion of the Pulmonary Specialists practice represents an important step in BMH’s continued efforts to expand access to quality healthcare in the Lowcountry,” said Russell Baxley, president & CEO of Beaufort Memorial. “Beaufort-area residents experiencing respiratory system disorders will now have excellent, specialized practitioners close to home."
Board-certified pulmonologist John Krcmarik, M.D., FCCP, will lead the new office. He will be joined by board-certified pulmonologist Andrew Stevens, M.D., and board-certified family nurse practitioner Shawna Nievierowski, FNP-BC. In addition to seeing patients in the practice, all three providers also treat patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Krcmarik draws on more than two decades of broad experience in his specialty to prevent, diagnose and treat acute and chronic diseases and conditions of the respiratory system, bringing particular expertise in the treatment of sleep disorders.
A graduate of Loyola’s Stritch School of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine, Dr. Krcmarik did his postgraduate training at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., completing an internship and residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in pulmonary critical care. Board-certified in both specialties, as well as sleep medicine, he is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians.
Dr. Stevens’ broad expertise encompasses the treatment of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), smoking cessation, lung nodule evaluation, lung cancer diagnosis, pulmonary hypertension, and interstitial lung disease. Additionally, he will provide care for patients admitted to the Beaufort Memorial Hospital intensive care unit.
He completed his Doctor of Medicine from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies, graduating summa cum laude. Subsequently, he completed a three-year residency in Internal Medicine at Georgetown University Hospital before completing a three-year fellowship in pulmonary disease and critical care medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Nievierowski works with the practice’s clinical team to prevent, diagnose and treat acute and chronic diseases and conditions of the respiratory system, including lung cancer screening and care coordination. Among her professional interests are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, complicated pneumonias and interstitial lung disease.
She holds a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Saginaw Valley State University in University Center, Mich. After earning her nurse practitioner degree and several advanced intensive and critical care certifications, she was recruited into pulmonary care where she developed a passion for the specialty that she’s now worked in for more than a decade.
