About Dr. Andrew Stevens
“I want to make sure that my patients feel heard. Taking the time to listen is essential for me to tailor care to what is most important to each individual patient.”
A board-certified pulmonologist and intensivist, Dr. Andrew Stevens draws on years of experience at highly respected hospitals in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases and conditions of the respiratory system in his patients at Beaufort Memorial Pulmonary Specialists. He also manages care for patients admitted to the Beaufort Memorial Hospital intensive care unit (ICU).
Areas of Expertise
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) – An umbrella term for a group of lung conditions including emphysema and chronic bronchitis, which result in shortness of breath.
- Asthma – A condition in which the airways become inflamed, swollen and constricted, causing excessive mucous production, wheezing and shortness of breath.
- Lung Cancer Diagnosis – The use of clinical examination and imaging tools, including computed tomography (CT), bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), and positron emission tomography (PET) scans, to identify and evaluate cancer of the lung.
- Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) – A broad-based term for an often-progressive group of diseases that cause scarring (fibrosis) and stiffening of the lungs, making breathing difficult.
- Critical Care – Highly specialized care, usually in an intensive care unit (ICU), for patients with the most severe illnesses or injuries.

Background
Born and raised in Toronto Canada, Dr. Stevens considered a business career until he discovered his passion for human anatomy. After graduating in the top one percent of his medical school class, he completed his residency at Georgetown University Hospital before completing his fellowship in Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Throughout his training he developed an interest in critical care, which he says is “the purest form of medicine” because it requires a “focus on fundamental problems that affect the whole body.” That holistic focus earned Dr. Stevens a prestigious award for patient-centered care at Cedars-Sinai.
Dr. Stevens and his wife, Amandine, moved to Beaufort after experiencing its beauty and friendly atmosphere. Although he was formerly a competitive snowboarder, he now enjoys warm-weather activities such as golf and relaxing on the beach.
