Arthroscopic Surgery

What Is Arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy is a type of minimally invasive surgery that allows surgeons to diagnose and treat an injury or condition using a small camera called an arthroscope. Because the camera is so small, surgeons need to make only a tiny incision. The procedure is used to treat a number of joint conditions, including some of the common causes of arthritis, perhaps helping you avoid the need for a joint replacement later in life.

What Hip Conditions Can Be Treated Arthroscopically?

  • Hip impingement, which limits range of motion and is a major cause of osteoarthritis
  • Torn labrums, which affects cushioning of the hip socket
  • Loose fragments of cartilage inside the joint, usually caused by an injury

What Knee Conditions Can Be Treated Arthroscopically?

  • ACL and other ligament injuries
  • Chondromalacia, wearing or injury of knee cartilage cushion
  • Loose bone fragments and/or cartilage in the knee
  • Torn meniscus, an injury to the cartilage between the thighbone and the tibia or shinbone

What Shoulder Conditions Can Be Treated Arthroscopically?

  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Shoulder impingement syndrome
  • Shoulder instability, including torn labrums

At Beaufort Memorial, we usually perform arthroscopy on an outpatient basis, allowing you to leave the hospital the same day and recover comfortably at home.

Following surgery, our dedicated physical and occupational therapists will work closely with you to create a personalized rehabilitation plan. Our goal is to help you regain as much mobility, flexibility and strength in your joint as possible. Your physical therapy team will also communicate regularly with your surgeon to ensure you’re progressing well and feeling like yourself again.
