Getting to Know Our Team

Visiting the emergency room can be stressful enough. To help you understand the role each member of our emergency care team plays in your or a loved one’s treatment, we’ve outlined their roles below.

Physicians and Physician Assistants

Extensively trained and experienced, the emergency department’s physicians and physician assistants are all board certified or board eligible. They can quickly evaluate, diagnose and treat a wide range of critical illnesses and traumatic injuries — or stabilize your condition for transport to a Level I trauma center if needed.

Recognized as experts in emergency medicine, they are sought-after teachers of students in the healthcare profession. Their primary duties include:

  • Evaluate and diagnose patients
  • Treat and stabilize for transfer
  • Write orders

Nursing Staff

Key to the Pratt Emergency Center’s team is its registered nurses. Many hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing as well as advanced certifications in emergency care and trauma nursing. Ably assisted by our EMT and ER technicians, nurses monitor every aspect of a patient’s care — from admission to discharge or transfer. Duties include:

  • Triage and assess (usually the first team member you will encounter)
  • Take medical history and stabilize your condition until you can see a provider
  • Carry out provider’s orders
  • Perform procedures
  • Serve as liaison between you, your provider, your family, the diagnostic departments and support staff
  • Provide patient education, including discharge instructions

EMT/ER Technicians

Our certified team of EMTs are the additional arms and legs in the often-hectic emergency room setting. Their roles include:

  • Assist nurse
  • Perform procedures within scope of practice, including blood draws, EKGs, insertion and removal of Foley catheters, splinting and wound care
