About Mr. Matthew Baker
“I like to help educate my patients by explaining some of the physiology related to their concerns as well as the treatment options for them.”
A certified physician assistant and a pharmacist, Matthew “Matt” Baker brings experience in both capacities to Beaufort Memorial Urology Specialists. Together with the practice’s board-certified urologists and other certified physician assistants, he works to diagnose and manage treatment for acute and chronic urological disorders that most frequently can be addressed with medication rather than surgery.
Areas of Expertise
- Prostate Cancer – Cancer that occurs in the prostate, a small walnut-sized gland in men that produces seminal fluid.
- Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) – A common noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland, which may slow or block the flow of urine.
- Hematuria (Blood in Urine) – Visible or microscopic amounts of red blood cells in the urine which may indicate a variety of conditions, some more serious than others.
- Urinary Incontinence – A loss of bladder control resulting in leakage of urine.
- Sexual Health – Diagnosing and treating the causes of sexual dysfunction and promoting wellness as it relates to sexuality.

Background
The Yemassee native and self-described “Lowcountry boy” completed several clinical rotations at Beaufort Memorial during his PA training. He came to Urology Specialists practice after seven years as a physician assistant at a urology practice in Bluffton, where he gained expertise in cystoscope procedures and active monitoring of patients with an elevated PSA level and those at the conclusion of their prostate cancer treatment. For the initial nine years of his medical career he was employed as a pharmacist before determining that his heart lay in direct patient care.
Mr. Baker and his wife, Nikki, a certified registered nurse anesthetist at Beaufort Memorial, have a son and twin daughters, all of them “big into sports,” he says. Luckily, he enjoys volunteer coaching, especially basketball, and also fishing local waters.
