About Dr. Curtis Elam
“I treat my patients how I want my wife and daughter to be treated – with kindness, respect and honoring their wishes. I treat my patients like my family.”
A board-certified physician, Curtis J. Elam, M.D., FACOG, brings a wealth of experience to the team at Beaufort Memorial Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialists. In addition to expertise in the areas of general, routine and specialized OBGYN care, Dr. Elam brings an extensive background in robot-assisted and laparoscopic surgery, and prenatal care for high-risk pregnancies to the practice in both Beaufort and Okatie.
Areas of Expertise
- High Risk Obstetrics - Providing pre and post-natal care for women with greater risk for complications during pregnancy, such as with advanced maternal age, mental illness, elevated blood pressure, twins, obesity and diabetes.
- Urogynecology - Diagnosing and treating pelvic floor disorders that can lead to issues like urinary and fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.
- Robot-Assisted Surgery - Gynecologic surgeries using the da Vinci Surgical System which, due to high-definition imaging, greater precision and dexterity, benefits patients with smaller incisions, less discomfort and quicker recovery.
- Endometriosis - A condition where tissue similar to uterine tissue grows in other areas of the pelvis, sometimes causing pain and infertility.
- Women's Health - Managing the full range of health concerns affecting women across all stages of life, including menopause management, gynecologic screenings like pap smears, prenatal/maternity/postnatal care and family planning.
Background
Dr. Elam knew from a very young age that he wanted to go into medicine; both his mother and father worked at a local hospital, and he himself began as a yard boy, then as an emergency department orderly. After his military experience in the active-duty U.S. Naval Reserve, working as both a battalion and regimental surgeon with the Marines, he found obstetrics and gynecology to be a good fit during his residency.
He’s passionate about his patients and enjoys both the surgical aspect of the specialty and the opportunity it offers to maintain long-term relationships with patients.
Dr. Elam and Marcia, his wife of 45 years and best friend, have two sons, a daughter and seven granddaughters. He loves to travel and spend time biking, swimming, walking and playing golf.
