What to Expect After Surgery

With surgery complete, you’re on the road to recovery. You will soon be going home to recover.

After Surgery — Outpatient

• In the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), you’ll be closely monitored as you recover from anesthesia.
• If you need oxygen, you may have a mask or tubing on your face.
• You may feel cold and shiver — which is normal after anesthesia. Warm blankets will be provided.
• Your nurse will ask about any pain and ask you to rate it.
• When you are awake and your vitals are normal, you’ll be released to the same-day area or your caregiver.

Same-Day Surgery Recovery

• Nurses will monitor you for about 30-60 minutes post-surgery.
• Family members can visit you in the same-day area.
• You’ll be offered a drink.
• Depending on the type of surgery, you may be required to urinate prior to discharge.
• You and your family member will receive written discharge instructions on follow-up care and any prescription medications.
• You won’t be allowed to drive. Someone must drive you home and stay with you for the remainder of the day.

Billing and Financials

You will receive a bill from Beaufort Memorial for your surgery. You may also receive a separate bill from your physician or surgeon, radiologist, anesthesiologist or other providers who have private practices. For more information or assistance, visit Patient Financial Services.
