Dr. Stuart Smalheiser brings a wealth of experience to the practice of cardiology. He specializes in interventional cardiology, including advanced heart attack care, with a focus on angioplasty and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Among his other professional interests is advanced arrhythmia management, including permanent pacemaker and implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implantation and clinical management.
Areas of Expertise
- Interventional Cardiology – A non-surgical option which uses a small, flexible tube called a catheter to repair damaged or weakened vessels, narrowed arteries, or other affected parts of the heart structure.
- Nuclear Cardiology – Nuclear cardiology is a subspeciality of general cardiology that involves the use of advanced nuclear medicine imaging modalities in order to evaluate, diagnose, and treat heart conditions.
- Cardiovascular Disease – Disorders of the heart and blood vessels, among them heart artery disease, congestive heart failure (CHF), heart valve disease and heart arrhythmia.
- Arrhythmia Management – Abnormal electrical conduction (beating) of the heart resulting in irregular, too fast (tachycardic) or too slow (bradycardic) heart rhythms.
- Heart Valve Disease – Abnormalities of heart valves including stenosis and regurgitation leading to possible systemic symptoms such as heart failure.

Dr. Smalheiser offers virtual visits for patients needing medication checks, standard chronic illness management, sick visits and follow up care for certain conditions. If interested, ask about the option when scheduling.
Background
A clinical assistant professor at the Medical University of South Carolina, Dr. Smalheiser serves as the medical director of the Cardiac Catheterization program at Beaufort Memorial; developing, implementing and overseeing the hospital’s heart attack program. He sees patients in Beaufort and also at Beaufort Memorial Harrison Peeples Health Care Center, where he offers telemedicine and in-person visits.
He is vice-chairman of the BMH Department of Medicine, chairman of the Credentialing Committee and former medical director of the hospital’s LifeFit Wellness Services cardiovascular rehabilitation program.
Dr. Smalheiser is an avid golfer and enjoys exercise and cardiovascular fitness. He and his wife, Veronica, a nurse practitioner at Beaufort Memorial, have one son.
