About Mr. James Varner
“I like to work together with my patients to understand their underlying health issues and take a direct approach that involves the fewest medications possible.”
A board-certified physician assistant, James Varner, brings a breadth of experience in both urgent and primary care to Lowcountry Medical Group Primary Care where he will provide primary health care, including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses in adults.
Areas of Expertise
- Diabetes - A chronic condition characterized by abnormally high levels of glucose, or sugar, in the blood that affects how the body turns food into energy and can cause damage to the heart, nerves, kidneys, or eyes.
- Preventative Care - Check-ups, immunizations, tests and screenings used to prevent serious diseases and medical conditions or to detect them before they become major problems.
- Obesity Medicine - A field of medicine that looks at and works with the behaviors, environment, genetics, nutrition, physiology and psychosocial issues that contribute to obesity.
- Geriatric Medicine - The medical specialty devoted to treating older adults and the unique physical and psychological concerns that can accompany aging.
Video Visits
Mr. Varner offers virtual visits for patients needing medication checks, standard chronic illness management, sick visits and follow up care for certain conditions. If interested, ask about the option when scheduling.
Background
The Pennsylvania native has served as a physician assistant at urgent care and family practice clinics in San Antonio since 2018, where he provided care for patients of all ages and conditions. Given the area’s high veteran, elderly, and obese populations, Varner gained specialized knowledge in treating patients who have multiple conditions and complex health issues.
Varner is excited to be in a city close to the size of where he grew up and having the ability to get to know the community and his patients more deeply.
Varner and his wife, Lacy, moved to Beaufort after it drew in much of their family, with both sets of parents now neighbors.
When not with family, the two enjoy boating and hiking.
