Mammograms are the best tool doctors have to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. Yet, mammograms sometimes get a bad reputation due to misconceptions about how painful they are, and many women are reluctant to get them.

“Mammograms can be painful for some women, but for many women, the discomfort is not as bad as they feared,” says Dr. Marlena Masavage, a board-certified OBGYN seeing patients at Beaufort Memorial Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialists in Beaufort and Okatie. “And the good news is that the whole process takes only about 10-15 minutes.”

What Happens During a Mammogram?

After removing all clothing from the waist up, you’ll stand in front of an X-ray machine. The technician will place one of your breasts on a plastic plate. Another plate will come down from above, flattening your breast and preventing it from moving while the X-rays are being taken. The process is repeated with your other breast.

Several factors can affect how much discomfort you feel:

  • The size and density of your breasts
  • The way your technician positions your breasts
  • Where you are in your menstrual cycle

The Breast Health Center at Beaufort Memorial offers 3D mammography, which can be more effective at detecting early signs of cancer.

What Causes Breast Pain and Heaviness?

While pain and swelling in the breasts can be signs of cancer, there are often other causes for discomfort. Cyclic breast pain occurs due to hormone fluctuations during your menstrual cycle. Noncyclic breast pain can have many causes:

  • Costochondritis, an inflammation of the cartilage between the ribs and breastbone
  • Infection or injury
  • Prescription medications

If you notice any pain, lumps or changes in your breasts make an appointment with your physician.

“Early detection of breast cancer greatly improves breast cancer survival rates,” says Dr. Masavage. “Mammograms save lives.”
