Do you think you know all there is to know about facelifts? You might be correct, but there are also some misconceptions that could be clouding your understanding.
“There are many myths about facelifts,” says Dr. Heidi Harrington, board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Beaufort Memorial Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics. “Unfortunately, holding onto these myths prevents people from achieving the look they want and enjoying the confidence and quality of life they deserve.”
Myth #1: Only Older Women Get Facelifts
Facelifts have often been seen as a procedure sought by older women. However, that’s not the whole story.
“The idea that you need to wait until you’re in your 60s for a facelift is outdated,” says Dr. Harrington. “Today, many people are opting for the procedure earlier to age more gracefully.”
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than one-third of facelifts are performed on individuals under 54. What’s more, men are also increasingly seeking facelifts to restore a youthful look.

Myth #2: Every Facelift Is the Same
No two facelifts are the same. Every procedure is tailored to fit the specific needs of the individual based on their skin health and desired results.
“Choosing the right facelift technique is about understanding your options and working with your surgeon to find the best approach for you,” explains Dr. Harrington. “There is no single, one-size-fits-all method.”
Myth #3: Facelift Results Go Away Quickly
While a facelift isn’t permanent, it provides long-lasting improvements. Many people enjoy smoother skin for a decade or more, and if done at a younger age, the results can last even longer.
“It’s important to take steps to maintain your facelift results,” advises Dr. Harrington. “Using sunblock, avoiding smoking and living a healthy lifestyle can help extend the benefits of your procedure.”
Myth #4: Recovery Is a Long Road
Most facelifts are outpatient procedures, meaning you go home the same day as your surgery.
While swelling and bruising are common right after surgery, you should be back to your routine within about 14 days. According to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, most people can return to work within a couple of weeks.
You may still notice tightness or minor swelling for up to a year, but following your surgeon’s advice will help you recover quickly and completely.
Myth #5: Any Plastic Surgeon Will Do
When seeking a facelift, you want the best possible results. This starts with finding a qualified plastic surgeon you can trust. Here’s what to look for:
- Expertise: Choose a surgeon who has fellowship training and board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. These credentials indicate extensive training and expertise in delivering high-quality care.
- Personality: You should feel comfortable with your surgeon. Look for someone who listens to your concerns and makes you feel like an active partner in the decision-making process.
- Satisfaction: Research patient feedback. The best surgeons will have excellent patient satisfaction scores and a proven track record.
Myth #6: A Surgical Facelift Is My Only Option
If you're not ready for surgery, don’t worry – there are other ways to restore a youthful appearance.
“Our field is constantly evolving, with new, non-surgical treatments emerging to help you look and feel your best,” says Dr. Harrington. “There are many ways to improve your appearance without the need for surgery.”
Some non-surgical options include:
- Neurotoxins: Injections of botulinum neurotoxin can help smooth out wrinkles in the upper face, such as crow’s feet and frown lines, lasting about three months.
- Dermal Fillers: These injectables can plump areas like the cheeks, lips or jawline, helping to reduce smile lines, enhance facial contours and restore a more youthful look.
If you’ve been thinking about a facelift, it’s important to separate fact from fiction. Consulting with a board-certified plastic surgeon will help you better understand your options and guide you in making the best decision for your desired results.
