Laboratory Accredited By College Of American Pathologists

BEAUFORT, SC – The main clinical laboratory at Beaufort Memorial Hospital (BMH) has received accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP). The accreditation is based on results of a recent comprehensive on-site inspection.

The federal government recognizes the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program—which was developed in the early 1960s—as equal to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program. The BMH laboratory is one of more than 7000 CAP-accredited facilities worldwide.

“The CAP accreditation process is designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients,” said Bradford S. Collins, M.D., medical director of Beaufort Memorial’s laboratory. “It is a tribute to our laboratory staff that we have once again been accredited by CAP.”

During their accreditation process, CAP inspectors examine a laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. They also examine laboratory staff qualifications, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management.
