The tried-and-true hygiene steps for containing contagious diseases are more important than ever — and some (once) less familiar forms of prevention have become part of our everyday lives because of the coronavirus pandemic.

How to Be a Hygiene Hero

To help prevent the spread of colds, the flu, the coronavirus and other infectious diseases, you can:

  • Cough and sneeze courteously. That means covering your mouth and nose with the inside of your elbow.
  • Get vaccinated. It’s not too late to get a flu shot. Be sure to get the COVID-19 vaccine when it’s available for you.
  • Mask up and keep your distance. Wear a mask in public. Stay 6 feet apart from people you don’t live with.
  • Sanitize your surroundings. Clean items you touch frequently, such as light switches, countertops, doorknobs, handles, keys, keyboards, remotes and your phone.
  • Wash (and watch) your hands. Clean your hands frequently with soap and water or, if necessary, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Don’t touch your face with unwashed hands.

Give Your Immune System an Assist

Your immune system helps protect you against viruses and bacteria, and you want it to be in top shape in case any germs come calling. Here’s how to support it:

  • Don’t smoke.
  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, which contain phytochemicals, compounds that support your immune system.
  • Ensure your diet includes other immune-boosting nutrients, such as beta carotene, protein, and vitamins C and D.
  • Follow hygiene best practices.
  • Get seven to nine hours of sleep each night.
  • Manage stress by doing something you enjoy each day.
  • Limit your alcohol intake.
