A Beaufort harbor at sunset When Tim McCall moved to the Lowcountry more than three years ago, he had only heard about our area’s incredible landscapes and Southern hospitality. A native of Pennsylvania, Tim, director of pharmacy services at Beaufort Memorial, was drawn in by this area’s natural setting and lack of snow.

“The landscape and weather are very different from the northern places I’ve lived,” Tim says. “I appreciate the weather — there’s no shoveling humidity! — and the beautiful beaches.”

Tim says he’s intrigued by the rich history in Beaufort and the surrounding cities, including Savannah and Charleston. But what stands out the most to him is the kindness and welcoming nature of people at Beaufort Memorial and in the greater community.

It’s an incredible place to live and work.”

A Supportive Workplace

Tim shares his experience as a pharmacist and in pharmacy management with the team at Beaufort Memorial. He appreciates the positive, supportive community environment.

“Our workplace is like a family — we do life together and we support each other in ways I’ve never seen in other work environments,” he says. “Our senior leaders are welcoming and provide pathways to getting our work done effectively.”

Tim has especially appreciated investments in pharmacy department renovations, including a new cleanroom, which is a controlled environment for compounding, packaging and preparing drugs. The cleanroom features advanced technologies that ensure patients receive the correct drug and dosage. In addition, the cleanroom is compliant with regulations set by United States Pharmacopeia (USP), a scientific nonprofit organization that sets standards for medicines, dietary supplements and foods to protect patient safety. As part of the renovation, the department also received new dispensary cabinets that help improve safety and patient care.

“Because of these leadership priorities and support, we’re further ahead than many hospitals our size,” he says. “We’re at the front edge of technology at Beaufort Memorial.”

“Tim is a good leader for many reasons,” said Assistant Director of Inpatient Pharmacy William Kautz. “He coaches staff to always do the right thing — and by keeping a positive attitude and speaking in a positive way.”

Recently, senior leadership acknowledged Tim for the pharmacy team’s contributions on the Beaufort Memorial Hub platform, a new internal communications tool to inform and engage staff.

“Tim gains the respect and support of his staff by constantly looking for ways to improve what we do while being fiscally responsible," Kautz said. "He helps create a positive work environment by giving staff the tools and support they need to do an excellent job. Tim sets a strong example by working hard and never resting on yesterday’s accomplishments.”

“I think some community members may not realize how different departments communicate and work together to provide the best for our patients,” Tim says. He’s encouraged by the supportive environment and colleagues. “Beaufort Memorial is a forward-thinking organization, and our leaders are planning for a great future. It really makes a difference in the work environment.”

“I like coming in to work and knowing I can make a difference in patients’ lives,” Tim says. “Through my work of ensuring safety and dispensing the appropriate medications, I serve our patients. As a manager, I ensure the pharmacy staff are happy and have the resources to do their jobs well. It’s reassuring to know that my work can make a difference.”
