Health Care Career-Focused Classes for Eligible Beaufort County High School Students


Starting January 2025, seniors enrolled at a Beaufort County School District (BCSD) high school and participating in a Health Sciences completer program, can participate in a tuition-free PATH Program to gain career ready skills and valuable experience while still enrolled in high school. PATH stands for People Achieving Their Highest.

  • Gain hands-on clinical experience in a state-of-the-art nursing simulation lab
  • Graduate ready to enter the field of health care with a national certification
  • Skip entry-level work and step right into a patient care role after graduation
  • Earn an opportunity for employment at Beaufort Memorial

Interested students need to contact their high school’s Career Development Facilitator and complete an application.

What is a Patient Care Technician (PCT)?

As a PCT, you routinely work in the inpatient hospital setting and you may perform some or all of the following tasks:

  • Provide basic patient care —bathing, feeding, catheter care
  • Acquire, distribute and administer patient care supplies
  • Perform safety checks and ensure cleanliness in patient rooms
  • Obtain EKG readings and monitor vital signs
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures

What is a Certified Clinical Medial Assistant (CMA)?

As a CMA, you routinely work in the outpatient physician practice setting performing a variety of tasks such as:

  • Taking patient vital signs
  • Assisting providers with exams and procedures
  • Administering injections or medications
  • Performing EKG, phlebotomy and other essential laboratory procedures
  • Checking patients in and out upon arrival and departure
  • Answering phone calls and questions
  • Updating and maintaining electronic health records
