Discover Beaufort

Although Beaufort Memorial serves many Lowcountry communities, our flagship hospital is located in Beaufort, the second oldest city in South Carolina and consistently ranked among America’s top coastal towns by Southern Living and Coastal Living magazines.

In addition to the fishing, sailing, swimming and surfing accessible to many Lowcountry residents, Beaufort attracts a diverse community of families, retirees, artists, military personnel and commercial fishers. Our picturesque downtown is populated with shops, restaurants and weekly farmers markets.

Families have access to public, private and faith-based schools as well as two postsecondary schools, the University of South Carolina Beaufort and Technical College of the Lowcountry. Beaufort has houses of worship for denominations and faiths of all kinds.

Greenspaces, such as playgrounds and the picturesque Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, offer more opportunities for enjoying seasonable temperatures, Runners, walkers and cyclists alike enjoy the Spanish Moss Trail, a 10-plus-mile scenic path that runs along a former rail line and was named a Top 10 Urban Walking Trail by Outside Magazine.

Bluffton and Port Royal

In addition to Beaufort, Beaufort Memorial serves cities throughout the three counties that comprise the South Carolina Lowcountry — Beaufort, Hampton and Jasper — each offering friendly communities, easy commutes and the same local charm that exists in Beaufort.

Bluffton, the fastest-growing municipality in South Carolina, appeals to artists and history buffs alike. The town’s Old Town Bluffton Historic District was granted National Register Historic District status. Within the district, unique restaurants and art galleries sit next to some of the state’s oldest buildings, and some of the area’s best seafood comes from the nearby May River.

Situated between the Beaufort River and Battery Creek, Port Royal is a nature lover’s paradise. The town’s rich estuaries support numerous bird populations, including brown pelicans, peregrine falcons and the American bald eagle, as well as a rare cypress swamp, and recreational boaters and sport fishers have plenty of access to waterways. Community parks offer opportunities for families to relax in a town that makes the most of the Lowcountry’s beauty.

Community Charm With Metropolitan Access

Many residents choose our area for its slower pace and small-town feel, but that doesn’t mean they sacrifice access to the amenities of larger cities.

We are perfectly situated for day-trippers and travelers who like to take advantage of the history, shopping and cuisine offered in nearby Savannah and Charleston, which are 90 and 60 minutes away, respectively. Forty miles from Beaufort, Hilton Head Island is popular among vacationers and offers additional beaches and recreation opportunities. The town’s historic Gullah neighborhood offers insight into one of the Lowcountry’s more unique cultures.
