Nursing Opportunities
Nursing at Beaufort Memorial offers diverse working experiences for the new graduate and the experienced nurse alike. Beaufort Memorial fosters an environment that supports your growth and development as a nurse. Our nurses have adopted the “shared governance” nursing model, which allows them the satisfaction of working together to make decisions that affect nursing practice and patient care.
Following are brief descriptions of our nursing units to help you choose the environment that is right for you.

3T Medical/Pediatrics
3T is a blended unit that consists of 20 adult medical beds for patients with general medical conditions ranging from acute to chronic with a specialty in stroke care. Because the unit also has a nine-bed dedicated pediatric wing, nursing on 3T provides experience on a wide continuum.
4T Medical/Surgical/Orthopedics
4T is a 29-bed unit that provides post-op care for general surgeries and acts as an overflow unit for medical patients. The Joint Replacement Center (JRC), a “unit within a unit,” comprises 10 of the floor’s beds. The JRC has its own dedicated staff for nursing and rehab along with a gym.
5T Medical/Surgical/Oncology
5T is a 28-bed adult medical/surgical/oncology unit. Located on the top floor of the hospital’s tower, 5T also admits post-operative gynecological and urological patients. With chemotherapy-certified nurses on duty, patients can if necessary receive their cancer treatment during their hospitalization.
Acute Rehab Unit
The Acute Rehab Unit is a 14-bed interdisciplinary unit where nursing and therapists work closely to coordinate patient care and rehabilitation. Nursing on this unit is similar to that on an acute care unit, and the average length of patient stay here is considerably longer than on other units.
Emergency Services
The recently renovated Pratt Emergency Center consists of 26 beds plus a 14-seat result waiting area. This is a Level III emergency center with nearly 50,000 patient visits per year and state-of-the-art equipment that supports innovative care. This is a closed unit with no floating.
Surgical Services
The Operating Room consists of 10 surgical suites, including endoscopy, cystoscopy and bronchoscopy suites. In addition to general surgery, the surgical services provided are orthopedics, ENT, vascular, GYN, spinal, urology and plastic surgeries. Minimally invasive surgeries are performed along with robotic surgery utilizing the da Vinci Surgical System. On-call is required.
Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
In addition to the 10-bed Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, nurses are cross-trained to work in the Pre-Admission Testing, Same-Day Surgery and Pre-Op Holding areas. At least one year of critical care experience is preferred. On-call is required.
Birthing Center
The Birthing Center consists of Antepartum, Labor and Delivery, Couplet Care and a Level II Nursery. The department, where approximately 1500 births take place each year, has its own educator and follows the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses standards for staffing. This is a closed unit with no floating.
Mental Health
2 East is a 18-bed unit providing general psychiatry services. It is the only inpatient mental health unit between Charleston and Savannah. Patients and staff have access to a screened porch overlooking the Beaufort River.
Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
The ICU is a 12-bed unit on the second floor of the main hospital building. Each of the spacious private rooms has site-line views from the nursing stations and state-of-the-art technology and monitoring systems. Patients admitted to the unit require comprehensive monitoring and treatment. ICU staff provides the Rapid Response and Code teams for the adult patients at Beaufort Memorial.
Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
The PCU, a 24-bed telemetry unit providing care to a diverse patient population, offers a robust base for the new-graduate nurse. The experienced nurse will likewise discover in the unit a wide range of patient care opportunities that are both stimulating and challenging.
Dialysis
The four-bay Dialysis Unit primarily focuses on adult inpatients requiring treatment during their hospitalization. Coverage is provided by dialysis nursing staff around the clock.
Cath Lab/Interventional Radiology/Imaging Nursing
The Cardiac Cath Lab/ Interventional Radiology/ Imaging Nursing Departments provide diagnostic and interventional services utilizing multiple imaging modalities. Nurses are cross-trained to work in all areas. Two years of critical care experience are preferred. On-call is required.
